The Coffee Plant
It is widely known that caffeine comes from flowering coffee or coffee plants. It is taken from the coffee beans and sometimes, from the leaves. One process is to dry the coffee beans or seeds and extract caffeine from these. While another method employs water as the solvent to extract caffeine from the green coffee beans.
A hundred grams of coffee beans contain 839 milligrams of caffeine. Seems like a rather small amount right? But, this is enough to keep a sleepy person awake or athletes to be active during practice.
The Cacao Tree
Another source of caffeine is the cacao tree, which produces cocoa beans. One cup of cocoa beans contains 197.8 milligrams of caffeine. So, for choco lovers, it should not be a surprise when they feel energised after eating chocolate. After all, caffeine, which is a stimulant, is present in cocoa beans used to make chocolate.
Yes, caffeine is also found in decaf coffees. You might say it is decaf, so, it should not have caffeine and should not be included as a source. But, decaf coffee is still one of the sources of caffeine.
According to a study by Consumer Reports in 2007, decaf coffee sold by different chains still contains caffeine. The study showed that the amount of caffeine in decaf coffee is not as high as in regular coffee. However, there is caffeine, no matter how little the amount is.
A Cone of Choco Ice Cream
When you order a choco-flavored or coffee-flavored ice cream, expect caffeine in it. There is approx. 4-milligrams of caffeine in a cup of chocolate ice cream. It is relatively low, but if you consume at least a gallon of ice cream, in say, a week, that’s a total of 16 cups. This means your caffeine intake for a one-gallon ice cream is 64 milligrams in a week.
A Dose of Weight Loss Pills
Weight loss pills are also sources of caffeine. The caffeine in the pills also acts as stimulants. However, it is not recommended for people to take weight loss pills that have caffeine in it. Too much caffeine intake has serious effects on a person’s body. It must be taken moderately and with a doctor’s prescription.
Caffeine comes from various sources. In fact, they can be found in cola, pain relievers, energy drinks and even in a powdered form. You may think that the food you are eating or the tea you are drinking does not have caffeine in it. But, you should think twice. Ultimately, some actual sources of caffeine are not what you’d expect.
